An auto accident can happen in an instant, but the harm caused to those injured can last a lifetime. Here are five things you should do if you are injured or your loved one is injured in a car crash:

  • Get the names, addresses, phone numbers and license plate numbers, if possible, of anyone who witnessed the accident. Do not depend on law enforcement offices investigating the accident.
  • Get photographs of the vehicle damage and injuries. If possible, take pictures of all the vehicles involved, preferably at the scene of the accident. Also, get photos of your injuries or your loved one's injuries as soon as possible and continue photographing them periodically through the recovery period.
  • Do not use your Personal Injury Protection insurance or your Medical Payments insurance, to pay your initial medical expenses, use your health insurance, if you have it.
  • Review your car insurance to determine if have PIP and MedPay coverage and/or Uninsured or Under Insured Motorist (UIM) coverage.
  • Hire a competent attorney to help you! Most people do not know how to assess the "value" of their injuries or how to represent themselves. Insurance adjusters are trained professionals; they handle countless cases and know what they are doing. No matter how pleasant they may be, do not depend on them to be fair or to protect your interests. Your interests and the financial interests of the insurance company are in direct opposition.
